Join the network.

FlightPortrait draws the sky above one home. We would rather own that data than rent it, so we run a receiver network. Anyone can feed it, and one receiver covers a metro.

Your station identity

Generated in your browser and stored on this device. This is your station's name and the key to its status page, so keep it. A new UUID is a new station.

Hand it to your agent.

Paste this to Claude Code, Codex, or whatever agent you use, and answer its questions. The brief tells it the rest, including what to buy if you have nothing yet.

Mission: take me from wherever I am now to a working ADS-B receiver that feeds the FlightPortrait network. Do everything that can be done from this machine yourself, and guide me in plain words through anything physical. I may not know any of the underlying concepts. Do not assume I do, and do not make me learn them unless I ask.

My station identity (UUID): YOUR-UUID
Use it wherever a station identity is needed. Never replace it: to the network, a new UUID is a different station.

Find out where I am starting from, and adapt:
- I have no hardware yet: tell me exactly what to buy and roughly what it costs. The reference kit: a Raspberry Pi 4 with power supply and microSD card (official resellers by country: raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b) or any Raspberry Pi 2 through 5 I already own, plus the RTL-SDR Blog V4 dongle with dipole antenna kit (about US$40 from rtl-sdr.com/store) or an equivalent ADS-B kit. Then stop; I will bring this brief back when it arrives.
- I have the hardware and you are on my everyday computer: download the adsb.im feeder image for my board and flash the microSD card from here, then walk me through assembly (antenna needs a view of the sky, a window helps), first boot, joining the device's own setup hotspot from my phone, and entering the network connection in its custom aggregator settings: host feed.flightportrait.com, port 30004, protocol beast_reduce_plus_out, my UUID.
- This machine is itself the receiver (Linux, dongle attached): set it up directly with the sdr-enthusiasts ultrafeeder container and the same connection settings. Ask me for the antenna's true latitude, longitude and altitude; multilateration depends on honest values.

Also offer to feed the open community networks (adsb.lol, adsb.fi, airplanes.live) alongside. That is the norm and FlightPortrait encourages it. Keep a small file of every identity and setting you create for me, and tell me where you put it.

Rules: outbound connections only, never expose anything to the internet. Prefer official images and documented settings over cleverness.

Done means: https://data.flightportrait.com/v1/stations/MY-UUID answers with my station online. Poll it, show me the result, and tell me in plain words what my antenna is hearing.

Doing it by hand instead.
  1. Buy a Raspberry Pi 4 (any memory size, new or used, with power supply and a microSD card; the link lists official resellers by country) and the RTL-SDR Blog V4 dongle with antenna kit (about US$40, ships worldwide). Any Raspberry Pi 2 through 5 you already own works too.
  2. Flash the adsb.im feeder image onto the microSD card with Raspberry Pi Imager. It is a free, open image made for exactly this.
  3. Plug antenna into dongle, dongle into Pi, Pi into power, near a window. Reception depends on how much sky the antenna can see.
  4. On first boot the Pi starts its own WiFi hotspot. Join it from your phone and it walks you through connecting to your home network.
  5. On its setup page, under custom aggregators, enter host feed.flightportrait.com, port 30004, and your UUID from above.

This page checks every few seconds. When your receiver connects, it shows here. The same status is always at data.flightportrait.com/v1/stations/your-uuid.

The roster shows your area rounded to about 11 km, computed from what your antenna hears. We never ask for an address. Your IP is not stored, and your UUID only as a hash. The feeder terms.
